Street Outreach

Street Outreach

Bethesda House's Street Outreach team works directly with individuals experiencing homelessness in unsheltered locations throughout Schenectady County, including those living on the streets, in encampments, or in other places not meant for habitation. Many individuals encountered through outreach face significant barriers to accessing traditional services, including limited resources, health concerns, past trauma, or difficulty navigating complex service systems. Our goal is to reach people who might otherwise go without assistance and help them connect with the resources they need to move toward greater safety and stability.

Outreach is built on consistency, compassion, and relationship-building. Staff meet individuals where they are, listen to their concerns, assess immediate needs, and provide assistance when possible. This may include food, clothing, hygiene supplies, information about available services, and help connecting with emergency shelter or other appropriate resources. Just as importantly, outreach creates opportunities to establish trust and begin conversations about housing, healthcare, and longer-term support.

The team helps individuals navigate available services and connect with emergency shelter, housing opportunities, medical care, behavioral health services, transportation, public benefits, and community-based resources. When appropriate, staff coordinate with other service providers to help reduce barriers, facilitate referrals, and support continuity of care. Because each person's circumstances are different, outreach efforts are individualized and responsive to the needs and readiness of each individual.

For people who have experienced prolonged homelessness, repeated crises, or significant trauma, accepting assistance may take time. Some individuals may be hesitant to engage with service providers or may have experienced challenges that make it difficult to trust systems of support. Bethesda House's outreach staff remain persistent and respectful, recognizing that meaningful progress often begins with a simple conversation and a consistent, reliable presence. Rather than expecting individuals to navigate the system alone, staff work to build connections and identify realistic next steps.

Street Outreach also strengthens Bethesda House's broader response to homelessness by helping identify unmet needs and connecting individuals to the appropriate programs and community partners. By engaging people in the places where they are living, our team helps bridge the gap between unsheltered homelessness and available services.

Every connection matters. Whether helping someone meet an immediate need, access medical care, enter emergency shelter, or begin the process of finding housing, Bethesda House's Street Outreach team works to ensure that individuals experiencing homelessness are treated with dignity and offered meaningful opportunities for support, recovery, and a more stable future.
